Spanish Courses

Our approach is simple: unless you are a complete beginner, you will complete a level test – and from this we’ll place you in a class with others at the same level. If you are looking for private tuition or exam prep / business help we’ll use the test to provide bespoke training to meet your precise needs.

In all our group classes and private sessions you’ll be encouraged to speak Spanish with your teacher and the other students, using class materials to gain confidence along with relevant homework which you can work on in your own time to improve your language skills.

Our classes

Typically, our classes have between four and 8 students (maximum 10), so everyone gets plenty of the teacher’s time. To give you an idea of what our face-to-face classes are like a class at beginners level is shown on this video and a class at a more advanced level is shown here.

All our classes are taught by fully qualified tutors from Spain and Latin America.  At Lorca Spanish we favour the “complete immersion” method which encourages students to use the language as much as possible in class. Research shows that complete immersion in the language leads to more effective and quicker learning. Teachers will occasionally use English for the purposes of clarification, usually in lower level classes.

Class Format

We run three terms per year: September – December (12 -14 weeks) ;  Jan-March/April (10 – 12 weeks) ; April-June / July (10 -12 weeks).  Students attend one  class per week, lasting 2.5 hours and with a short interval – “descanso” –  for tea/coffee and biscuits and a comfort break! Please note that although it takes more than one term to complete a level (apart from complete beginners – which takes one term) you don’t have to enrol for more than one term at a time.

This takes place on a term-by-term basis. Please note that although it takes more than one term to complete a level (apart from complete beginners – which takes one term) you don’t have to enrol for more than one term at a time.

We run semi-intensive classes at beginner, elementary and pre-intermediate level over the summer period – twice per week x 4 weeks during July and August

One-to-one (standard syllabus or tailored) courses are ideal for those students who cannot commit to a particular time for a group class or who wish to study on their own. You can follow a standard General Spanish course or a more bespoke course allowing you to focus on a particular topic. Please contact us for further details: enquiries@lorcaspanish.com

These classes are arranged on private group basis where people at a similar level study together in a small class. Please contact us for further details: enquiries@lorcaspanish.com

Find Your Level

Lorca Spanish offers courses for everyone from complete beginners to advanced students. All students (unless they are complete beginners) take a short test which helps us place them in the most suitable class. Our General Spanish courses then follow a set syllabus which allows you to progress and improve your proficiency with the language.

No previous knowledge of Spanish is assumed and the course starts with very basic phrases and phrases as well pronunciation practice.  Students will develop fundamental skills, enabling them to communicate at a basic level. Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 1

This is a course for those with previous but limited knowledge of Spanish. It begins with revision of the basics – e.g. giving personal information and re-visits the use of the present tense before progressing to look at new grammatical structures and vocabulary. Students should be able to express basic personal information related to daily life and have a basic knowledge of Spanish language structure and vocabulary. Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 2

This level extends the grammar and vocabulary learned in level 1. Students should be able to express, orally and in writing, opinions, feelings and needs related to daily life. They should be familiar with regular and irregular present tense verbs, some past tenses (pretérito perfecto), future (“ir a” + infinitive verb), the present continuous and pronouns (direct and indirect objects).  Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 3

This course introduces more complex levels of conversation. There is greater emphasis on vocabulary and a strong focus on accuracy in terms of speaking and writing skills. In addition to the tenses looked at in level 2, students also learn the uses of the imperative as well as the future and past perfect tenses. The subjunctive is also introduced at this stage.  Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 3

At this level one of the main objectives is better accuracy in speaking and writing. Students have sufficient knowledge of the verb tenses to be able to use present, past and future comfortably. The subjunctive is practised further. More free-form conversational work takes place at this level and students will participate in presentations and class debates.  Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 3

All main verb tenses and important grammar structures will have been covered by the time students reach this level and this course is about maintaining a high level of Spanish. Typically, this involves class debates and discussions on varied topics from current affairs, films and general culture. Students will be expected actively to participate in discussions to expand their linguistic and cultural knowledge as well as being able to select the appropriate vocabulary and register for different situations.  Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 6

The Level 5 course is designed to maintain and perfect an already high level of Spanish. Students will be able to change their style of speaking easily and will be quite happy with changes of speed and intonation as well as being familiar with more specific communicative functions of the language. The students will also be able to recognise different Spanish and Latin American dialects. The course consists of debate and discussions on varied topics from current affairs, films and general culture.

Number of terms normally required to complete this level: at this level the emphasis is on maintaining and perfecting your language skills therefore enrolment could be for a minimum of one term or on an ongoing basis.
